Remove text from a PDF

Remove a word, a phrase, or a name that should not be there. Nothing outside that line moves.

What happens to the space

Take four words out of a line and everything after them can move left by the width of four words. In a sentence that is what you want. In a table row it breaks the column, and on a form it moves a value out of its box.

By default the following text moves left to fill the gap. When deleting from an aligned row, untick Move the rest of the line — the width the deleted characters occupied is kept in the line, so the next character stays at the exact position it had, and the check afterwards confirms it. Either way, nothing outside that one line moves.

What this is good for

  • A phrase that should not have been printed — an internal note, a placeholder, a name that belongs to somebody else.
  • A trailing fragment, like a reference appended to a line that no longer applies.
  • Tidying a value down to something shorter without retyping the whole line.

This is not redaction

The characters are gone from the page, but a document has a history and a structure, and this makes no claim to have scrubbed every trace of anything. If you are removing something because it must not be recoverable, use a tool built for redaction and verify it.

It also cannot remove a line. Emptying one leaves its space, because pulling the lines below it up is a re-layout of the page.

The steps

  1. Upload the document

    Any PDF whose text you can select in a reader.

  2. Paste the text to remove

    Including the space before or after it if you want that gone too.

  3. Leave the second box empty

    That is what removal is. With Move the rest of the line ticked, the following text moves left to fill the gap.

  4. Check the result

    The picture shows the line with the words gone and everything after them still in place.

Questions

Does the gap close up?
It does, unless you untick Move the rest of the line. Unticked, the space stays and every character after it keeps its position — the right setting for figures in aligned columns. Either way nothing outside that line moves.
Is this redaction?
No. The characters are removed from the page, but this makes no claim about what else a file might retain. For anything that must not be recoverable, use a tool built for redaction.
Will the text still be searchable afterwards?
The removed characters are gone from the page's text, so searching for them finds nothing. Everything else stays real, selectable text.
